Russia has fined Facebook and Twitter for not deleting
banned content. Earlier, the country had fined foreign tech giants several
times. That list is long today.
Russia is already wielding the sword against US-based
technology companies, the AFP news agency reported. He was accused of
interfering in the upcoming parliamentary elections last week.
A court in Moscow has fined Facebook a total of 21 million
rubles in five rounds. In the same court, Twitter was fined 5 million rubles.
Russia's state-owned news agency TASS has reportedly fined
Facebook 90 million rubles and Twitter 45 million rubles.
The Russian government has reportedly taken legal action
against Internet platforms for not deleting content deemed illegal. It can
range from pornography to drug use or suicide.
Russia's judiciary has fined Google for similar allegations
and for failing to protect Russian users' information inside the country.
Critics of the Kremlin, including supporters of jailed
opposition leader Alexei Navalny, have been barred from voting in Russia's
September 18-19 parliamentary elections.
The Russian Foreign Ministry said last week that the US
ambassador to Moscow had been summoned over "interference" in the
election of US tech giants.
Meanwhile, Russian media authorities have shut down dozens
of websites associated with Navalny. One of the websites contained instructions
to remove politicians from the ruling United Russia party.
Roscomanadzor has asked the two companies to remove
Navalny's 'Smart Voting' campaign app from Google's Play Store and Apple's App
Store.
The United Russia party lost several seats in the 2019 local
elections due to its 'smart voting' strategy.
