Knowing That Their Services Are Having A Detrimental Effect On The Users, Facebook Has Remained Silent.
The influential Wall Street Journal has published a number
of reports this week based on leaked documents on Facebook. Reports show that
Facebook is well aware that its own services are having a detrimental effect on
users. However, despite knowing, no action was taken to solve it.
Referring to the reports in the Wall Street Journal, CNN wrote that a lot can be deduced from the reports. But the thing that catches the eye is how shamelessly the problems of Facebook have been documented. The use of such language is not common in the internal communication of multinational corporations. Here are some of the issues from the investigative reports in the Wall Street Journal.
The Wall Street Journal cites Facebook's own research on the
harmful effects of Instagram on the mental health of young people. "We
have helped one in three young women to have a bad idea about their body,"
the 2019 Facebook research report said.
Elsewhere, it was written that young people blamed Instagram
for increasing emotional anxiety and depression. Such a reaction was spontaneous
in almost everyone. Facebook often cites outside research reports as saying
that the relationship between social media use and depression is quite low. But
the organization's own research says different things.
Kareena Newton, Instagram's head of public policy, told the
Wall Street Journal that Instagram users may have had a negative experience.
However, the app has given the opportunity to express the views of marginalized
people and keep in touch with friends and relatives. In Newton's words, Facebook's
internal reports express a commitment to trying to understand young people's
complex problems.
Facebook CEO the Mark
Zuckerberg has to repeatedly said that publicly that Facebook has given to equal
opportunity to the billions of the users. However, another report from the
organization said that Zuckerberg's claim is not true. Because, the platform
has come up with special benefits along with politicians, stars and other
celebrities.
At one point in the report, it was written, ‘We are not
doing what we say in public. Compared to the rest of the members of our
community, these people (important people) do not have to face any problem in
breaking the policy. '
Facebook spokesman Andy Stone told the Wall Street Journal
at the time that such practices could be criticized, but that important people
were excused for important reasons.
Again in 2016, Mark Zuckerberg said, Facebook's algorithm
was changed to increase communication between friends and relatives and reduce
institutional content in the news feed. However, the Wall Street Journal
reported that the result was the opposite. And Facebook workers were also
warned about that.
