FIFA is optimistic about hosting the World Cup every two years. FIFA technical director Arsene Wenger said he had received a positive response. The former footballer is also working with the former footballers and coaches to promote the issue. Meanwhile, according to former Danish footballer Peter Smykel, small countries will benefit if the new plan is implemented.
Not every four years, the World Cup will be held every two
years. Former Arsenal coach Arsene Wenger, the head of FIFA's Global Football
Development, has presented the plan to FIFA. The FIFA official has already
started a publicity campaign to get full support for the plan.
Wenger is working on the campaign through video conferencing
with about 60 former footballers and coaches. The former French footballer is
quite optimistic about the new plan.
We have already received a very positive response, but
it is a democratic decision, said Arsenal Wenger, FIFA's technical
director. The 211 FIFA-affiliated countries need to reach a consensus on the
issue. That is why we are discussing with everyone. We will have to wait until
December to reach a final decision. Then all the federations will be informed
what will happen in the end.
In December, FIFA will make the final decision on whether the World Cup will be held every four years or every two years. However, according to the former Danish footballer, small countries will benefit if the plan is implemented.
Former Danish footballer Peter Smykel said: I think it would be great if the World Cup was held every two years. Because for those who come from small countries like ours, qualifying for the World Cup every four years becomes very challenging for those countries. If the World Cup is held every two years, the smaller countries will benefit more.
Meanwhile, Javier Tevez, president of the Spanish League,
one of the leading figures in European football, has opposed the new plan. According
to him, if this new plan is implemented, World Cup football will lose its pomp,
as well as the fans will lose interest.
